Outdoor Creative Writing in Benfield Valley 11-06-22

On Saturday 11th June, I had the pleasure of leading a creative writing session with a group of budding local writers. We met at Greenleas and made our way into the smaller of the woodland dells where we found ourselves somewhere comfortable to sit amongst the trees and plants.

It was a gloriously sunny day and the breeze danced in the leaves above us, making me think of one of my favourite words, ‘psithurism,’ which is the word used to describe the rustling sound of air moving through leaves. We sat on the log and the table, a remnant from past inhabitants of the woodland space, and started with a short mindfulness exercise, taking in everything that was around us, before moving onto some free writing.

Our prompt for the day was the line, ‘in the morning…’ which I explained could be a first line, a last line, a line embedded in their piece, the title…whatever they wanted it to be.

The writers went off to find their own space in the dell and got on with their writing immersed in the sounds and sensations of this tranquil haven.

Sharing is never an expectation in my sessions but everyone was feeling brave so shared their work. It was incredible to hear everyone’s work and how they had responded to the prompt. I’m really looking forward to the next one! See below for upcoming dates.
